The D's put in a battling performance against a strong Silihill side who sit three divisions above, and have just won the London Minor Cup.
The D's started off strong, and stifled Silhill for much of the first half. Wake Green had a lovely opportunity to go 1:0 up when the Silhill keeper handled a passback. Wakes managed to get a corner from the free-kick, and unfortunately the chance to get an important lead went by.
The referee, seemingly inconsistent for both teams throughout the game, gave what seemed to be a soft free-kick to Silhill on the edge of the box at the stroke of half-time. However, there was nothing soft about the finish as the free-kick nested into the bottom left corner of the Wakes goal to give Silhill the lead.
In the second half, it was clear that the younger Silhill team were starting to get a hold on the game. It wasn't long before it was 2:0 when a Silhill player was tripped inside the area. The penalty was dispatched to give Silhill a two goal lead and an even more difficult task for Wakes if they were to get anything out of this game.
Wakes came back with a good goal of their own, with good work on right wing and a good cross into the box. The ball was prodded into the net to give Wakes a chance with the game set to 2:1.
Silhill upped the pressure in the game and eventually claimed three more goals to make it 5:1.
Wakes put in a real battle and certainly didn't shame themselves against opposition sitting three divisions above. If the D's play like this for the remaining games of the season they'll climb further up the league to cap off a decent season.
Up the Wakes!
